Arkansas, the Natural State, used to be nicknamed the Bear State for good reason. The Ozarks were filled with black bears! No wonder Davy Crockett became a folk hero. People born in Arkansas tend to stay there, and they love passing along folklore about animals, people, and events. Another state favorite are the Razorbacks, named by a University of Arkansas football coach, way back in 1909, who said his team resembled "a wild bunch of razorback hogs."
