The Great Lakes, extensive river waterways, and rich natural resources of iron ore and lumber determined the future of Michigan. Factories lured people away from their farms, and soon, the Wolverine State became a giant of industry. Beautiful forests cover over half of the state and four of the five Great Lakes touch its borders. There are thousands of islands, numerous cascading waterfalls, and some of the country's largest herds of deer, elk, and moose. Michigan has the best of two worlds - the great pillars of American industry and some of the most scenic natural landscapes in our nation.
