The Treasure State is Montana's official nickname, but it is also affectionately called "Big Sky Country" and the "Land of the Shining Mountains." Our fourth largest state in area is still filled with the wide open spaces of the early West. The Great Plains are high plains that stretch toward the awe-inspiring Rocky Mountains. Bighorn sheep, grizzly bear, buffalo, moose, and elk are found near the state's northern border of Canada, and Montana is the only contiguous state where wild wolf packs are still free to roam the immense, untouched wilderness.
