Windsurfing in Hood River, salmon fishing at Astoria, crabbing near Newport, or just driving the breathtaking 400-mile coast, is Oregon at its best. The Beaver State, named after those pesky little tree gnawers and dam builders, brought traders to the territory for the beavers' valuable fur pelts. Pioneers packed their wagons and headed for Oregon over a route known as the Oregon Trail. These early pioneers blazed the path out of rugged wilderness from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Today, Oregonians still have that progressive, pioneer spirit.
