South Carolina is actually named for an English king, King Charles II. We usually think of Caroline as a girl's name, but in Latin, Carolina means Charles. When the original colony was divided in two, both sections kept the king's name and added North and South to their names. More Revolutionary War battles were fought here than in any other colony, and the first battle of the Civil War took place here, too. South Carolina, the Palmetto State, is a state of firsts that are part of America's heritage.
